If you are stuck on mission 2, the reason is almost certainly the same for everyone: this is the mission where the game stops giving you the target and starts making you find it. Operation 1 handed you a grid reference. Operation 2 sends observers instead.
First, a correction worth making
Mission 1 is Calibration Fire, not mission 2. It is common to see the two swapped in guides, and getting it wrong will send you looking for the wrong content.
Calibration Fire deliberately withholds observers. High Command designates a calibration grid and expects high explosive on target to confirm the nest is combat-ready. It teaches grid-to-coordinate mapping, traverse and elevation, powder charge selection, and HE calibration — with no triangulation at all.
The campaign runs to fifteen missions, ending with White Shells. Operations 1 through 4 are designed to be played in order, each layering a mechanic the next one assumes you already know.
What operation 2 adds
Triangulation, and nothing else fundamental. The fire-control loop is identical to operation 1 — read orders, plot the target, pick a charge, fire — but the "plot the target" step now requires deriving the coordinate rather than transcribing it.
That single change is responsible for most of the difficulty spike. Everything else you learned in Calibration Fire still applies exactly as it did, which is worth knowing if the mission feels overwhelming: only one link in the chain is new.
Operations 3 and 4 then layer requisition pressure and counter-battery fire on top of the same loop. Mission 2 is where the loop itself becomes complete, so time spent getting it automatic here pays back across the rest of the campaign.
The procedure
- Plot both observers before drawing anything. Blue markers show observer positions on the map. Match the marker number to the observer number in the order text first — a bearing attributed to the wrong observer produces a perfectly plausible intersection nowhere near the target.
- Draw from observer 1. With the yellow pencil, click the observer's position and drag outward. The line reports distance and bearing live. Pull it to the map edge and rotate until the bearing matches the report.
- Repeat from observer 2.
- Read the intersection. Where the two lines cross is the target.
- Re-measure from the nest. Draw a third line from the IRON NEST marker to that intersection. That bearing is what goes to the guns.
Step 5 is the one people skip, and it is the one that decides whether the shell lands. The triangulation drill covers the underlying geometry in more depth.
The mistake this mission punishes
An observer's bearing is the bearing from the observer. It is not the bearing from your turret, and copying it directly onto the gun produces a shot that is confidently, precisely wrong.
Because you cannot see outside the nest, nothing tells you why. The correction that comes back reads like a ranging error rather than a plotting error, so operators frequently "correct" themselves further from the target. If your rounds are landing consistently and consistently wrong, check whether you re-measured from the nest before you adjust anything else.
Charge selection has the same trap. Distance for the charge is measured from your guns, not from the observer to the target — and because the observer's range is already written on your card, it is the easier number to reach for.
When the geometry itself is bad
Two failure modes are worth recognising before you spend a shell on them. If the two bearings never cross, one report has almost certainly been attributed to the wrong observer — re-read both rather than forcing an intersection near the map edge.
If the lines only cross behind an observer, one bearing has been reversed by 180°. A bearing is the direction the observer is looking, not a back-azimuth, and this is a transcription error rather than a geometry problem.
If the report gives distance instead of a bearing
Some reports arrive as a range rather than an azimuth. Switch from the pencil to the compass — the blue tool on the clipboard, below the pencils — and scribe an arc at the reported distance from that observer. Two arcs, or one arc and one bearing line, resolve to the same intersection.
Before you fire
Confirm all five: marker number matches the order; each line starts at its observer and not at the nest; the lines genuinely cross rather than converging off-map; the gun bearing was re-measured from the nest; and the charge was chosen for the nest-to-target distance.
The last item catches more misses than any other. Working the checklist takes seconds in a mission where nothing is shooting back yet, and the habit is what carries you through Operation 5 when there is no time to check anything.
