Map measurement — the new-operator route

Everything in IRON NEST starts on paper. Orders arrive at the teleprinter, you transcribe them onto the clipboard, and the guns only ever act on what you wrote down. A mission is rarely lost at the breech; it is lost three minutes earlier at the map table.

What the first operation actually teaches

Calibration Fire — the opening operation — deliberately withholds observers. High Command designates a calibration grid and expects high explosive on target to confirm the nest is combat-ready. With no spotters in play, the mission isolates four skills:

  • Converting a grid reference into a point on the map
  • Measuring bearing and distance from the nest to that point
  • Choosing a powder charge appropriate to the distance
  • Traversing and elevating the guns onto the solution

Treat it as a lab rather than a battle. Nothing is shooting back, and the same four steps sit underneath every later mission in the fifteen-operation campaign.

Write the solution down before you traverse. The turret is slow enough that you will forget a digit while waiting for it, and there is no way to re-read the teleprinter tape mid-traverse without losing your place.

The pencil is the tool you will use most, because bearing is the measurement almost everything reduces to. The compass matters more later, when observers start reporting ranges instead of azimuths, but learning both now costs nothing.

Reading a grid reference properly

A grid reference is a point, and the whole of Calibration Fire is about getting that point onto the map without corrupting it in transit. Read the reference off the tape, say it back to yourself, then place it — the intermediate step catches transposed digits before they become a line on the map.

Once the point is placed, measure to it from the IRON NEST marker. Both numbers you need, bearing and distance, originate at your own position. This seems obvious in an operation with no observers, which is precisely why the habit is worth building here: from Operation 2 onward there will be other positions on the map competing to be your origin, and the discipline you build now is what keeps them straight.

Transcription habits worth building early

  1. Read the order twice before drawing once. Digits transposed on the clipboard propagate silently through every later step.
  2. Label everything. When observers appear in Operation 2, unlabelled lines become indistinguishable within seconds.
  3. Measure from the nest, always. Both bearing and distance for the guns originate at your position, never at an observer's.
  4. Keep the card current. Corrections are applied to the recorded solution, not remembered from the last shot.

None of these is a technique so much as a routine. IRON NEST is unusual in that its difficulty lives almost entirely in clerical discipline rather than in reflexes, and players who struggle with it are generally improvising the routine rather than failing at the arithmetic.

Charge selection is a distance question

The powder charge is chosen for the range from your guns to the target. That is the only distance that matters for the charge, and it is the one people substitute a different number for once observers enter the picture.

Which charge suits which range is unconfirmed on this site. Those values are measured from the live build and can change with a patch, so no table is reproduced here that has not been verified.

Why the game withholds so much

Nothing in the interface tells you the correct procedure, and the game does not grade your working — only your results. This is deliberate, and it is why a guide is worth reading at all for a game whose mechanics are, individually, simple.

The consequence for a new operator is that a wrong answer arrives with no explanation. You cannot see outside the nest, so a shell that lands nowhere useful looks identical to a shell that landed where you told it to. Building the routine early is the only reliable defence, because the routine is what makes an error traceable afterwards.

Practise it free before buying

The demo runs the same fire-control loop with procedurally generated objectives, so every habit on this page can be drilled without owning the game. It also carries two challenge modes with leaderboards, around thirty ammunition types and fifteen regions, which is more than enough scope to make the routine automatic.

Time yourself from teleprinter to first round rather than measuring accuracy alone. Accuracy on an unhurried shot tells you very little about how you will perform in Operation 5, when a counter-battery clock is running and the map work has to already be finished.
